Seoul National University, Graduate School of Data Science
Seoul National University (SNU) is the leading comprehensive research university in Korea with a broad spectrum of disciplines encompassing liberal arts, natural and social science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, business, law, etc. Recognizing the importance of data science as the foundation of future higher education, SNU established its university-wide Big Data Institute (BDI) on April 10, 2014. Professor Sang K. Cha led the planning of this institute from September of 2013 and served as the founding director until August 30, 2019. SNU BDI established the unique status of nationally leading data science research and education and digital transformation of industry and government. SNU secured 28 faculty headcounts from the Korean government to establish the Graduate School of Data Science (GSDS) and link this school to other academic disciplines. SNU GSDS started in March of 2020 with the first batch of master and Ph.D. students admitted through a highly competitive process.
SNU has three nationally leading hospitals and GSDS is in close collaboration with these hospitals as well as other SNU schools. The school also has a strong partnership with major private and public entities in Korea across almost all sectors such as manufacturing (Samsung, LG, and SK), telco (SKT, KT, LGU+), and financials (Shinhan, NH, Keb Hana). SNU GSDS is collaborating with almost all leading academic institutions in Japan, China, Singapore, Germany, and France. Several venture capitalists from Silicon Valley are also involved in GSDS as advisors.

Woo Chul Lee, master’s student in AML, designed the logo, with his aesthetic effort to evoke our lab’s vision and identity.
“Boat in the ocean was articulated in the logo, subtly to express AML’s vision, sailing the vast ocean of Machine Learning realm. Four types of blue-tone colors were applied with different saturation. Lastly, the combination of alphabets A, M, and L was put in the palette of the logo.”
